What Does a 4 Way Reverse Valve Do?

The 4 way reverse valve controls the direction of refrigerant flow through the heat pump system. In heat pumps equipped with cooling functionality or defrost cycles, this valve allows the refrigeration circuit to operate in reverse. During normal heating, refrigerant flows in one direction to transfer heat to the pool. When reversed, the flow changes to either cool the pool water or to initiate a defrost cycle that clears ice buildup from the evaporator coil during cold weather operation.

Signs of Reverse Valve Problems

A faulty reverse valve can cause several issues: the heat pump stuck in heating or cooling mode and unable to switch, ineffective defrost cycles leading to ice accumulation on the coil, reduced heating or cooling performance, or unusual noises when the system attempts to change modes. Because the valve operates through a solenoid, electrical faults can also prevent it from switching correctly.

Compatibility Note

This valve fits multiple Duratech models from 2014 onwards. Earlier units may use a different valve design, so confirming your heat pump’s production year is important before ordering.
