DIY Installation Guide – You Can Do This!
What You’ll Need
- PVC primer and cement (if not using union connections)
- Bypass tee fittings or diverter valve (if not already installed)
- Teflon tape or thread sealant
- Phillips screwdriver
- PVC saw or tubing cutter
- Clamps for securing flexible tubing (if using barb connections)
Step 1: Plan Your Bypass Location
The chamber must be installed after your filter but before any UV or ozone equipment. This ensures the probe monitors clean, treated water without interference from sanitizing equipment.
Ideal bypass setup:
- Create a bypass loop that diverts approximately 0.5 GPM through the chamber
- Use a ball valve or gate valve to control flow rate through the bypass
- Position the bypass so you can access the chamber for service
Step 2: Mount the Chamber
Orientation is crucial for accurate readings:
- Mount the chamber as close to vertical as possible (within ±5° of vertical)
- Probe tip should point downward when installed
- Service valves should be accessible without removing the chamber
- Leave at least 12″ of clearance above for probe removal
- Secure chamber to prevent vibration or movement
Step 3: Plumb the Connections
- Select appropriate barb fittings – choose 3/8″, 1/2″, or 3/4″ based on your bypass tubing
- Connect bypass tubing – the chamber is non-directional, so flow can enter from either port
- Secure all connections with proper clamps on flexible tubing or union connections on rigid pipe
- Install isolation valves in your bypass loop for future service (highly recommended)
- Test for leaks under pressure before proceeding to electrical connections
Step 4: Install the Probe
- Close the service valves on the chamber (if installed)
- Remove the probe cap and keep it safe for future storage
- Insert probe into chamber until it seats properly in the mounting socket
- Hand-tighten the retaining ring – do not overtighten
- Open service valves (if present) to allow water flow around probe
Step 5: Connect to Your Control System
- Locate the CO module on your in.touch 3+ spa controller
- Find the short probe cable extending from the CO module
- Connect the probe cable – it only fits one way, so don’t force it
- Verify LED status on the CO module:
- Blinking blue = normal operation, probe connected
- Solid red = no probe detected, check connection
- Solid yellow = probe not yet identified, wait 30 seconds
Step 6: Start-Up & Calibration
- Start your pump and verify water is flowing through the bypass
- Adjust flow rate to approximately 0.5 GPM using your bypass valve
- Allow 30 minutes for readings to stabilize
- Verify readings in the Gecko Connect app
- Calibrate if needed using the app and pH buffer solutions (typically only needed once)
Pro tip: Most probes ship pre-calibrated, so you may not need to calibrate immediately. Monitor readings for a few days and only calibrate if they seem consistently off.

Why Choose the Gecko Waterlab System?
1. Eliminate Guesswork
Stop wondering if your water chemistry is right. The Waterlab system gives you precise, continuous readings so you can maintain perfect balance without constant testing.
2. Catch Problems Early
Real-time monitoring alerts you to chemistry changes before they become visible problems. Cloudy water, algae growth, and equipment damage from poor chemistry become things of the past.
3. Save Money on Chemicals
By knowing exactly what your water needs, you’ll stop over-treating and wasting chemicals. Precise ORP readings tell you when sanitizer is effective, preventing unnecessary additions.
4. Remote Monitoring
Check your water chemistry from anywhere using the Gecko Connect app. Perfect for vacation homes, rental properties, or when you’re traveling.
5. DIY-Friendly Installation
You don’t need a spa technician to install this system. If you can cut pipe and make basic plumbing connections, you can install the Waterlab kit in an afternoon.
6. Built to Last
Gecko engineers this equipment for the harsh environment inside a spa equipment bay. Chemical-resistant materials and IPX5 waterproofing mean this system will serve you for years.
Maintenance & Care Tips
Regular Maintenance (Weekly)
- Check bypass flow rate – maintain approximately 0.5 GPM
- Verify readings appear normal in the app
- Inspect for any leaks around plumbing connections
Extended Maintenance (Monthly)
- Visually inspect probe through chamber (if clear housing)
- Check that probe remains securely seated
- Verify LED status on CO module remains normal
Seasonal Maintenance
If closing for winter:
- Close bypass valves and remove probe
- Rinse probe with clean water
- Replace storage cap on probe with sensing tip kept moist
- Never store probe in deionized or distilled water
- Store chamber in a protected location
When reopening:
- Inspect probe for any damage
- Remove storage cap and reinstall probe in chamber
- Allow 30 minutes for readings to stabilize after water flow resumes
- Verify readings appear normal before assuming calibration is correct
Probe Replacement (Every ~2 Years)
The probe is a consumable component with a typical lifespan of 2 years depending on usage and maintenance. When accuracy begins to drift even after calibration, it’s time for a new probe. The chamber itself should last the lifetime of your spa with proper care.
Troubleshooting Common Issues
Probe Not Detected (Red LED)
- Check cable connection at CO module – reseat if necessary
- Verify probe is fully seated in chamber
- Inspect probe cable for damage
- Try disconnecting and reconnecting after 10 seconds
Readings Seem Inaccurate
- Allow 30+ minutes after any system change for stabilization
- Verify water is actually flowing through bypass (valve open?)
- Check that chamber is mounted within ±5° of vertical
- Calibrate probe using pH buffer solutions via app
- Verify filter is clean – dirty filters affect flow rate
Probe Not Yet Identified (Yellow LED)
- This is normal for 30-60 seconds after connection
- If it persists, disconnect probe, wait 10 seconds, reconnect
- Verify in.touch 3+ software is up to date via app
Slow Response to Chemistry Changes
- Increase bypass flow rate slightly (aim for 0.5-1.0 GPM)
- Clean probe sensor area if buildup is visible through chamber
- Check that water temperature is stable (rapid temp changes affect readings)

Frequently Asked Questions
Q: Do I need to calibrate the probe before first use?
A: Most probes ship pre-calibrated from the factory. Install it, allow readings to stabilize for 30 minutes, then compare against manual test strips. Only calibrate if readings are consistently off by more than 0.2 pH units.
Q: How often does the probe need calibration?
A: Typically just once during the probe’s ~2-year lifespan, though you can calibrate more often if desired for maximum accuracy. The app makes calibration easy with step-by-step guidance.
Q: Can I install this on an older Gecko system?
A: You must have an in.touch 3+ controller with CO module and a compatible spa pack from 2012 or later. The system will not work with in.touch 2, in.touch 3 (standard), or older Gecko equipment.
Q: What happens if my probe goes bad?
A: The probe is replaceable. When accuracy degrades after 2+ years, simply order a replacement probe (Part #12563) – you can keep using the same chamber. The app will recognize the new probe automatically.
Q: Does this kit work with bromine or chlorine?
A: Yes! The ORP reading works with any oxidizing sanitizer including chlorine, bromine, and salt-generated chlorine. It measures oxidation potential, not the specific chemical.
Q: Can I use this with ozone or UV?
A: Yes, but the chamber must be installed BEFORE your ozone or UV system. If installed after, the residual oxidizers will interfere with accurate ORP readings.
Q: My spa pack is from 2011 – will this work?
A: Unfortunately no. Gecko made significant changes in 2012, and pre-2012 spa packs lack the necessary communication protocols for Waterlab integration.
Q: Do I need special tools for installation?
A: Just standard plumbing tools – PVC saw or cutter, primer/cement (if using rigid pipe), and screwdrivers. If you can install a spa pack or replace a pump, you can install this system.
